Never underestimate your abilities.

In late 2015, after taking a brief hiatus, I decided it was time to take on new cases. One case that caught my attention involved a young woman who was searching for her brother, born in Paris, whom she believed had been brought to the United States as an infant. If you’ve followed my work over the years, you know that I usually avoid international searches. The plea for assistance sat in my inbox for a few weeks before I finally decided to respond. Initially, I felt discouraged when I discovered that a well-known Search Angel had already attempted to solve this case. I wondered what made me think I could uncover any information that she hadn’t been able to find. Yet, a persistent intuition urged me to give it a shot.
The child in question was the result of a tumultuous relationship. His mother decided to leave the country with him and immigrated to the United States, where she spent decades raising him without revealing the details of his origins. Meanwhile, the heartbroken father, on the other side of the world, never forgot his son. He often spoke about him to his older half-sister, shared the few photographs he had, and celebrated his birthday each year.
The only clues we had were the mother’s maiden name and the child’s birthdate. To my astonishment, the pieces of the puzzle fell into place quickly. After identifying a potential match for the mother, I confirmed that she indeed had a son born in the same year. I was able to gather a collection of photos of both her and her son, who was now in his early 30s. The highlight was discovering a YouTube video that I could share, which further validated our match. The resemblance between the son and both his father and half-sister was striking.
In the days that followed, I embarked on the delicate task of reaching out to him, fully aware that he might be unaware of his international family. Imagine receiving a phone call out of the blue, revealing such life-changing information. The emotional reunion brought forth many joyful tears from everyone involved.
Since then, I have followed their journey together. One of the most touching moments was a poignant meeting at a Denmark airport, where brother and sister embraced for the first time in their lives. This was just the beginning of many cherished family memories to come.
The key takeaway from this experience is to never underestimate your abilities. I often advise others on this front, so perhaps it’s time I start heeding my own advice.
